Shipping Wine from Portugal to Japan can be more affordable than you'd expect

Most people assume importing wine into an Asian market means steep tariffs and red tape.

Japan is the pleasant exception. Thanks to a trade agreement between the EU and Japan, European wine — including Portuguese wine — enters the Japanese market on notably favourable terms.

Why Japan Is Wine-Friendly

●       Customs duty on EU wine is 0% under the EU–Japan Economic Partnership Agreement, which eliminated tariffs on wine imports from the EU.

●       Japan's liquor tax on wine is a flat rate based on volume and alcohol content, not on price — since a 2023 reform unified it with the rate for sake. In practice, this works out to roughly ¥75 for a standard 750ml bottle, a predictable, modest amount regardless of what the wine actually costs.

●       Consumption tax of 10% applies on top, as it does to any import into Japan.

What About Small Orders?

Japan Customs waives both customs duty and consumption tax entirely when the total customs value of a shipment is ¥10,000 or less — so a modest first order is unlikely to trigger either charge. The one exception is the liquor tax itself, which applies to every bottle regardless of the shipment's value; it's simply never waived, but as noted above, it's a small, flat amount rather than a percentage of price.

The Overall Picture

Put together, this makes Japan one of the more cost-predictable destinations for shipping Portuguese wine: no customs duty, a small flat liquor tax per bottle, and standard consumption tax. Compared to markets where wine is taxed as a percentage of value, the cost of shipping a bottle to Japan is easier to estimate upfront and doesn't rise sharply for higher-value wines.
